A´18 demonstrates the best in sustainability and durability

Posted on July 09, 2018

With more than 200,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space to explore, 135 courses to attend, and 800 brands to check out, attendees of the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 went home tired, but also inspired.

Hosted in New York City June 21-23 at the Javits Convention Centre, the annual conference delivered on its promised theme: A Blueprint for Better Cities. From software to building systems to stone and tile, visitors to the show learned about the latest high-tech products and building materials that offer improved durability and sustainability for cities of the future.

A perfect fit on the show floor was BASF´s combined performance materials exhibit. A collaboration between Poly Urethane Spray Foam, Basotect, Neopor, Walltite, Master Builder and Disaster Durable Solutions divisions, the booth was packed with product experts fielding questions and making recommendations.

"It´s paramount for BASF to demonstrate its presence, authority and history at a show like this," said Jamie Hicks, BASF Business Development - Skytite Roofing Systems. "It was very positive to have the performance materials lineup in the booth. Most visitors were interested in more than one technology."

Eric Pickelsimer, Sales Management NA - Basotect was quick to agree: "It was a valuable show for BASF. And, it was beneficial to see how Basotect compliments the other building and construction solutions that BASF provides to architects."

Although there was a lot of focus on sustainability, durability was a hot topic on the show floor as well. "Post Hurricane Sandy more people were interested in durability than ever before," said Hicks. "The building science discussion is making its way into architect circles. They aren´t experts, but they know how to ask the right questions and pay attention to things like CI, air tightness and thermal bridging.

Once a deathtrap for birds, the Javits Center's 2014 renovation by FXCollaborative has turned it into a sanctuary and created the country´s second-largest green roof on a civic structure in the process. Featuring pixelated, bird-friendly glazing, its 6.75-acre green roof is now home to 17 bird species, five bat species, and 300,000 honeybees. Learn how this green roof is helping reduce energy consumption, urban heat gain, and stormwater run-off, all while doubling as sanctuary for area wildlife.
