Taking you beyond code

Taking you beyond code

BASF is joined by a team of industry experts at this year's International Builders Show. Ask the experts how you can go beyond code and what it can mean to your company.

The team’s approach is simple: Add to the structural integrity and sustainability of the home while exceeding code and presenting a tight, efficient home that is highly desired by today’s buyers.

Cracking the Code

Dealing with complex building codes has an advantage—it helps builders become more adaptable to change. When digging through changes and how they affect the build, it is easy to become overwhelmed on what these far reaching changes mean to every department in a company.

Buildings account for about 40 percent of total U.S. energy consumption and 40 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions¹, and these new code changes are geared lowering that number and helping solve our energy problems.

Finding the sweet spot

There is a question of supply and demand. At what premium will a consumer pay for a home that is beyond code and offers excellent energy saving for the life of the structure? The Institute for Market Transformation–through a study of the Washington DC market–indicates that “high-performance homes marketed with green features sell for a mean premium of 3.46% compared to homes without green features”. The trick is to contain costs below that premium while building to a higher standard, exceeding code and producing a consistent product that is safe, healthy and energy efficient.

Going BEYOND.High Performance®

With an interdisciplinary team of building science professionals, architects and energy specialists focused on developing beyond-code construction, the Center for Building Excellence has found that sweet spot for builders. This high performance approach to construction not only enhances sustainability, but also improves comfort, health, safety, durability, speed of construction and energy efficiency.

The Center for Building Excellence has achieved outstanding results when working with regional builders and consulting with company management, supervisors and trade partners. Collaborating with all parties allows for the Center to analyze plans, present opportunities for cost shifting, and execute to ensure that the process sticks.

The goal of every project is to leverage the benefits of high performance construction without facing disproportionately high costs. By mastering the knowledge of cost shifting, the team’s approach is simple: Add to the structural integrity and sustainability of the home while exceeding code and presenting a tight, efficient home that is highly desired by today’s buyers.
